Lifelong list maker

I’m a big list maker — grocery lists (organized by section of the store), lists of fun story ideas for UNH Magazine and especially to-do lists. My daily process of making a to-do list fits in well with my obsession over office supplies and notebooks — anyone who has been on a Zoom with me knows that I sit in front of a large bookshelf filled with the spiral notebooks, three-ring binders and writing pads I’ve accumulated over many years.

So when I thought of all the things I wanted to share about this edition of UNH Magazine, a list immediately came to mind. Think of the title of this list as “three things every UNH Magazine reader needs to know.” Here we go:

1. Mentors, mentors everywhere — you’ll notice a throughline in this issue about mentorship. You’ll see the main mentors feature story, thanks to so many of you who shared your heartwarming stories of mentors past and present. SO many of you, in fact, that we couldn’t fit it all in the print edition, so the expanded version of this story with even more mentor stories and some highlights of campus mentorship programs can be found in this online edition: magazine.unh.edu/mentors. In addition, be sure to check out the Ristainos’ story, which shows how they’re honoring a mentor with a scholarship in his name. You’ll find even more in the In Memoriam section, and sprinkled throughout Class Notes. I hope these stories will make you think of your own mentors, those who “got you through,” and that you’ll share your story with me; we’ll keep the good stories going in future issues!

2. Hail and farewell to those class correspondents we’ve lost in the last year, as well as to those who have handed off the reins to the next generation of column writers. Class Notes is always the best-read section of the magazine, and class correspondents are curators of all those memories and stories that help us stay connected. A warm welcome to our new class correspondents — your role is so important! And for those of you who haven’t sent in a note lately, be sure to send one in for the next issue of the magazine by writing your correspondent or Classnotes.editor@unh.edu.

3. How are we doing? We want to hear from you about UNH Magazine — whether you read it digitally or in print. Your opinions will help us shape this publication and find stories you want to read. And here’s the cool part: complete the survey, and you’ll be entered to win a New England lobster dinner for two, shipping anywhere in the continental U.S.! (For those of you who are not seafood lovers, we’ll provide an equal value of UNH apparel.) Go to this link online: bit.ly/3OxtFjA to share your feedback via a survey.

I hope to hear from you — with magazine feedback, a mentor story, a class note or just to share some thoughts. Until then, happy reading!
