UNH’s 13th president steered the university through a turbulent era

W

hen Eugene Mills put his name in to become UNH’s 13th president, the University System Board of Trustees responded with a surprising offer: to forego a national search in favor of appointing Mills as permanent president, based on the successful work he had done as provost. Mills wouldn’t hear of that, however, and insisted he be considered among a pool of qualified candidates. When he assumed the role in 1974, he was just the second UNH president to be named from within the faculty.

In addition to his term as provost, Mills served the university as chair of the psychology department, dean of the Graduate School, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and academic vice president. Ginny Theo-Steelman, ’62, ’69G, who chaired the presidential search committee that led to Mills’ appointment, says the final impetus for his selection was not only his academic achievements — it was also his deep love of and commitment to UNH, which was unmatched by several highly competitive candidates.

“Gene’s devotion to the university was lifelong,” Theo-Steelman says. “I‘ve always felt fortunate he and I had a strong connection throughout his tenure and further engagement with UNH after he retired.”

Indeed, following his tenure at UNH and subsequent terms as president of Whittier College and Earlham College, his undergraduate alma mater, Mills and his wife Dottie returned to Durham, where they were a regular presence on campus. Mills died on Aug. 17, at the age of 95, a few months after Dottie passed away. The couple had been married for 74 years.

As the university’s academic and administrative leader, Mills had his work cut out for him. As provost under 12th president Tom Bonner, he took on much of the day-to-day work of the president’s office while Bonner prioritized strengthening the university system. Succeeding Bonner as president, his tenure continued to reflect the aftershocks of the tumultuous 1960s. Vietnam War protests, civil rights unrest, gender inequity (in 1973, only three of UNH’s 138 full professors were women) and the growing voice of the LGBTQ+ community (then newly organized as the Gay Students Organization), all represented daunting challenges — challenges that were compounded by near constant attacks from the conservative Manchester Union Leader and Republican Gov. Meldrim Thomson. At the same time, the country was grappling with an energy crisis so severe that the campus was shut for an extended time over winter break and UNH had to dip into reserves to pay the heating bill. While there were few new buildings constructed during his tenure (the Elliott Alumni Center and the themed mini-dorms were the most notable), there is plenty of evidence that President Mills rebuilt what was most important for the times: relationships and systems between and among constituencies.

“He was a comforting president, a president who healed, and that was something we needed very much,” recalls former UNH interim president J. Bonnie Newman, who served as dean of students during Mills’ presidency.

After an era of protests and unrest, Mills brought people together, though the work often required taking existing structures apart. With 1972’s federal Title IX law front and center, he commissioned a task force to examine athletics, and under his direction, the program was divided into men’s and women’s athletics, with both athletic directors reporting directly to him. When faculty complained that student voices in the university senate should not have the same weight as those who were teaching them, Mills separated the one body into two. It is also because of Mills that a pair of staff councils were created. He wanted all internal constituencies to advise him on the best path forward for UNH.

Newman says President Mills was “the quintessential academician. Faculty respected him, and students liked him very much.” Moreover, “he and Dottie were just incredibly decent people, and they cared deeply about UNH.”

Before Mills was selected as president, Tom Bonner told him, “The president is expected to move about the cocktail circuit or the student union with equal elan; he is to be erudite, yet folksy; a visionary, yet a pragmatic politician; a bit of a stand-up comedian, yet in many ways also a country preacher — and through it all this oft-weary soul, this walking bundle of hopeless contradictions, is to smile and keep smiling.”

That weighty description did not deter Mills; instead, he grabbed the reins and led UNH through one of its most critical decades.

Ruth Gannon ’67
Ruth Gannon ’67
A onetime nun, she was fearless about finding her own happiness

I

n her 92 ½ plus years, Ruth Gannon ’67 was known by a number of names — Mary, Mary Ruth, Sister Maria, Mrs. Arthur Hull Rigor Da Eva. She was in her eighties when she legally changed her name to one of her own choosing, going so far as to update her passport so she could continue the global travels she’d taken up in her later decades, following an unexpected divorce. “She wanted to start her life over from the beginning, determining who she was meant to be,” says daughter Donna Rigor Da Eva ’83, one of Ruth’s six children, and one of three who followed her to UNH. “My mom always led by example.”

Ruth was, in fact, the name her mother wanted to give her when she was born on Nov. 10, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, but a local Catholic priest insisted she be given a saint’s name. Her father gave her the only Catholic saint’s name he knew — Mary. Growing up, she was mostly known by friends and family as Mary Ruth or Ruthie anyway.

A talented student, Mary Ruth left Ohio at 13 to attend a Catholic boarding school in Syracuse, New York, graduating as her class salutatorian even after taking a year off to help her mother care for her two younger siblings. She took college courses at night while holding down a full-time job at Ohio Bell, and accepted the proposal of a man 10 years her senior, but when her fiancé told her she “thought too much” and wouldn’t have time for books once she was busy raising his children, she decided she needed to find a different path for herself. It was at the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People that Mary Ruth Gannon became Sister Maria Del Ray.

Sister Maria found the work fulfilling and “fell in love” with the people she served in New Orleans, Louisiana, Gulfport, Mississippi, and Nashville, Tennessee, but like so many others, that love led to heartbreak. At a segregated hospital, she could only stand by, helpless, as a dear friend, who was Black, died during childbirth, forbidden to seek the assistance of white doctors working just down the hall. After that, she left the order and joined her mother and siblings in Malden, Massachusetts.

In Malden, she met and married Arthur Hull Rigor Da Eva, with whom she had Robert, Roy, Arthur Jr., Donna, Michael and Laura — all in the span of 7 ½ years. When the family moved to Barnstead, New Hampshire, Ruth resumed her college education at UNH. Remarkably, she graduated when Laura was just three years old. “I still have photos of my mother’s graduation day with all six of us celebrating the big day with her,” Donna says.

After UNH, the family moved back to Massachusetts, to Newburyport, where “Mrs. R” first taught special education and then taught second grade for several decades. Finally settled into what she’d thought was the life she’d been meant to lead, she was devastated when Arthur left after 37 years of marriage. “It was incredibly hard for her, because she took her marriage vows seriously,” Donna says. “But she stayed close to her children and friends, remained active in the community, traveled, and found life was truly rewarding when freed of all encumbrances.”

It was with this mindset that, in her 80s, she went with one of her granddaughters to get her first (and only) tattoo: a daisy, on the top of her foot. Laura says it was her favorite flower because of its resilience in the face of adversity — much like Ruth herself.

Ruth happily enjoyed her final years in her own place in the heart of Newburyport, which served as the launch pad for remarkable adventures in Europe, the Soviet Union, South America and the Middle East. Of all her travels, her favorite destination was Israel — a land that had loomed large in the religious stories she learned in childhood. At the ancient fortress of Masada, as she waited for her tour group, she heard “music on the breeze” that evoked the voices of Israelites who had been massacred by the Romans centuries earlier. It turned out the music was just the wind blowing across the top of her open water bottle, but in her own telling, the moment was quintessential Ruth. As she put it in the obituary she wrote for herself before her passing, “her journey started with God and ended with the Force.”

Ed Friedlander Jr. ’88
Ed Friedlander Jr. ’88
He was the magnet who brought together a broad cross-section of alumni friends

I

f you were a friend of Ed Friedlander ’88 and you got his call about a ski trip, or a fishing weekend, or a Christmas season reunion in Boston, you knew you didn’t want to say no.

Friedlander was the type of person who was a connector between different groups of friends, and who could always bring people together. “He was just one of those guys who was always all-in,” remembers Matt Witkos ’89.

Friedlander earned his degree in civil engineering but spent most of his career in software sales; first for more than a decade at Newmarket International in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and for the past 15 years as the senior vice president of business development at Vestmark in Wakefield, Massachusetts. He made it a point to not only hire UNH students and graduates, but also to mentor them. Several of them were among the people who spoke at Friedlander’s celebration of life held in July, which drew a crowd of nearly 200 online and in-person at an outdoor venue on the Seacoast.

Friends and family say Friedlander’s best talent in both life and business was his love of communicating. Wife Debra Pulpi-Friedlander says in her husband’s sales career, talking with and getting to know customers was his favorite part of the job. And friend Scott Hendrickson ’89 says in discussions with his friends, “Ed was the guy who would talk about stuff that really mattered … he made you want to be your best version on your best day.”

As an engineering student, Friedlander was diligent in his studies — at least until Thursday nights came around. He was also a brother at Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and while he enjoyed the costume parties and socializing, he also took to heart his various leadership positions within the fraternity.

Friedlander’s sister, Jane Friedlander Bannister ’87, was part of the reason he came to UNH. Only 16 months apart in age, the siblings had been close growing up and remained so throughout their college years, sharing a car and at one point living across the street from each other on campus. Bannister says while many remember her younger brother as outgoing and personable, she recalls the shyness he worked hard to overcome, especially at college.

“My brother came to UNH and did things that were hard, like rushing a fraternity,” she says.

“He took advantage of his time at UNH to learn his strengths and overcome challenges. For him, college was about growing and experiencing new things.”

Friedlander grew up in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and his family spent summers and winters on Moose Pond in Bridgton, Maine. He and Debra have two children, Madison and Colton.

While his career was focused on sales, those who knew Friedlander say he was, at heart, an entrepreneur. “His mind was always thinking of ideas,” says Witkos. An avid skier and snowboarder, shortly after graduation he developed a concept to use the wickets used to attach ski tickets as a way to sell advertising. “Ed had that innovative spirit in his blood from an early age.”

Friedlander passed away at his home in Essex, Massachusetts, on June 19 at the age of 53, following a brief, non-COVID illness that struck him suddenly. In their grieving, Friedlander’s friends, family and colleagues chose to create a merit-based scholarship at UNH. The Edward M. Friedlander ’88 Memorial Entrepreneurship Scholarship will be awarded to students who express entrepreneurial interests and skills, much like Friedlander’s.

“This scholarship is meant for someone who wants to do something to benefit others … to do something they believe in, and try new things,” Debra Friedlander says, describing that as her husband’s approach to his work and life.

Hendrickson agrees that a scholarship to inspire future entrepreneurs is a fitting tribute to his friend. “UNH is really the thread that we all have in common. We all had such an amazing four, five, maybe six years at UNH, and post-college, our friendships have only grown stronger.”

Bryan Lyons ’91
Bryan Lyons ’91
A dentist with a big smile and an even bigger heart

I

n 2015, when Rick Hoyt chose Bryan Lyons ’91 to take over for his father, Dick, with whom he had competed in the wheelchair division of the Boston Marathon since 1981, Lyons took on the mantle with characteristic humility. Then a six-year member of Team Hoyt, “He would say ‘I am just a fresh set of legs … just the driver of the bus,’” recalls Lyons’ longtime love, Sandra Lehane. “He was honored to compete with Rick, and while Rick could have chosen any one of many athletes who offered to compete with him, he chose his best friend — Bryan.”

Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray says the significance of that honor can’t be emphasized enough, given the Hoyts’ legendary status in the running world. “That Rick chose Bryan says everything you need to know about who Bryan was as a person and a competitor: kind and compassionate, but also fierce and funny,” McGillivray says, noting that Lyons cared for Rick like a brother and made it possible for the 58-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, to experience the same kind of freedom through running that his father had. “Bryan made a difference in this world, and really, what else is more important than that?”

Lyons also made a difference through his professional calling. “He always wanted to be a dentist,” recalls his mother, Pat Lyons— a lifelong dream that earned Lyons the affectionate nickname Uncle Herbie, after the elf-dentist from “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” from his nieces and nephews. Inspired by the gentleness and meticulousness of the family dentist he saw growing up as the second of John and Patricia Lyons’ four children in Nashua, New Hampshire, “he had a passion for ‘making smiling’ and giving confidence to his patients,” Lyons says.

At UNH, he earned his degree in biology while living first in Alexander Hall with childhood friend Tim Farr ’91 and later with another friend from Nashua, Derek Rolfe ’91. Although he was a serious student, he was also a bit of a prankster, once hanging a biology lab cow heart from his RA’s door with a note that read, “Come on, Stanley, have a heart!” He loved his education and experience at UNH, leading the way for both sister Beth Lyons Schneider ’93 and younger brother Mark ’94. He was thrilled when Lehane’s son, Sean ’23, committed to UNH as a kicker for the Wildcat football team.

McGillivray recalls seeing Lyons’ unique combination of playfulness and grit on display when he and Rick competed in a one-of-a-kind marathon inside Fenway Park. “I will never forget his strength, determination and courage as he pushed Rick for 116 laps around the warning track,” McGillivray says. “Every time we passed each other, the son of a gun had a smile on his face even though I know he was hurting like the rest of us, and he still belted out words of encouragement to the 49 other runners in the race.”

Lyons earned his dental degree from Tufts University and opened his own practice, Lyons Dental, in Billerica, Massachusetts, where he cared for patients for 25 years, including many who became his friends. That he was dedicated to their overall health and wellbeing is exemplified by a story from early in his practice about a patient who asked to reschedule his appointment because he was experiencing heartburn. Seeing the patient’s distress, Lyons wouldn’t let the man leave the office, and instead called an ambulance to take him to the closest hospital. Later that day, the cardiac surgeon who had performed emergency bypass surgery on the patient called Lyons to thank him for saving the man’s life.

After the 50-year-old Lyons died in his sleep on May 31, just hours after a 12-mile run, hundreds of patients and friends came forward with stories of what he had meant to them. Lehane was particularly struck to learn of those whom he had encouraged to bike, run or swim — just as he had done for her. “He never passed on an opportunity to kindly challenge runners to use their legs and hearts to push an athlete in a running chair,” she recalls. It’s just one of the many ways in which she and others will carry forward his legacy of athletics and altruism. “He was right — being someone’s legs is one of the most gratifying experiences that changes your life.”
