Jere Lundholm ’53
Part of the university’s DNA

I

f you used to hang around the UNH Field House, you likely would have heard the name “Jerriet” mentioned on a regularly basis. The person behind the unusual moniker is actually two people — Jere Lundholm ’53 and Harriet Forkey ’54, ’67G, who together could be considered the most loyal and loving of Wildcats — to each other and to their alma mater.

For decades, Jere Lundholm — the “Jere” of Jerriet — dedicated his time and treasure to not only support current UNH athletes and programs, but also to stay connected with his fellow UNH alums. On June 15, 2021, he died, following a recent diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS.

The diagnosis was especially hard for those who knew Jere as a lifelong athlete. “By the end he couldn’t stand, and for somebody who had been so active all his life, it was hard to believe,” Harriet says. “He was just an absolutely beautiful skier and lacrosse player — graceful, flowing and strong.”

The pair dated during Harriet’s senior year, when Jere was in graduate school at MIT. But life took them on different paths, until they reconnected during a skiing trip to Austria with mutual friend Penny Pitou in the 1970s, and then again in the 1980s. They married in 1984, when both were in their 50s. It was his first marriage, and he inherited Harriet, two children, a horse, a dog, a cat, and a beautiful home on Cardigan Mountain in Alexandria, New Hampshire. Harriet says in each other, they found a partner who was positive and empathetic. She also notes one of the secrets to their relationship was Jere’s ability to listen.

He was passionate about his life with Harriet and their family, (which includes Robert and Waree Belford and their children Vincent and Carissa Belford; and Charlene and Robert Fellows). His second passion was for his alma mater. His attachment to the university began long before he became a student here. His parents, Carl and Ada Lundholm, were both connected with UNH, as his father was the athletic director here for 42 years and the namesake of Lundholm Gymnasium.

Lundholm played lacrosse as an undergrad, and excelled at all he pursued in both academics and athletics — earning a 4.0 GPA and several scholarships, including a full scholarship for his graduate work at MIT, where he earned his master’s in mechanical engineering. He spent two years in the U.S. Air Force before starting what would be a 35-year career at the international consulting firm Arthur D. Little. There he worked as a case engineer, solving thermodynamics problems and other technological issues, before eventually serving as the vice president of international contracting. His career allowed him to travel internationally, and he used every trip as an opportunity to learn more about the people and places where he was working.

Harriet says her husband was special in that he never let his ego run amok, and was never lording over others. “He was a very grounded person; he had a lot of emotion, but he had no anger in him,” she recalls, noting that her husband was “caring, empathetic … always optimistic and looking for a win-win solution in any negotiation.” He also had a great sense of humor and loved telling stories, she says.

Throughout his lifetime, he was the embodiment of a loyal alumnus. In 1966, he began serving for three terms on the Alumni Association board of directors. He served on the Athletic Director’s Advisory Board and numerous committees. He was the first recipient of the UNH Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year Award. Lundholm was inducted into the UNH Athletics Hall of Fame. His last volunteer project with Harriet was to organize and implement the Fabulous 50’s Decade Reunion. Both were honored by UNH as recipients of the 2019 Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy. Their combined passion project was the UNH Sports Gallery Project, on display in the Field House. Over 10 years, they worked with an active committee and UNH Athletics to raise more than $100,000 and collect photos and identify team members. The gallery includes photos of not just athletic teams, but also other UNH recreational activities, dating back to 1894.

Childhood friend Dudley Dudley ’59 told the Manchester Union-Leader newspaper that both the University of New Hampshire and the town of Durham have lost a kindhearted, iconic man. She said she will always remember Lundholm’s facial expressions. “He had a smile that just wouldn’t stop,” Dudley said. “He used it often. It made people feel very much a part of his life.”

Harriet says her husband wanted to be remembered for his kindness. “He was truly interested in people and always wanted to do good.” She notes that even he was dying and in the last few weeks of his life, he continued to take a special interest in each of the hospice workers who came to their home, asking questions to get to know them, curious about their lives and their hopes and dreams. Says Harriet, “He still kept that positive generosity and engaging friendliness about him.”

Michael Jon Dalton ’64
Michael Jon Dalton ’64
A man of eclectic interests, he loved boats, Hawaii, zip-lining, glider flying, and, most of all, his family.
A

mong Bea Worden Dalton’s favorite memories of her husband, Mike, are the more than 30 years they spent traveling to Hawaii where they hiked in Volcanoes National Park and snorkeled in the warm water off Kona. In Maui they shared the once-in-a-lifetime experience of photographing a whale as it swam beneath their sailboat.

Married for 37 years, the Daltons also enjoyed river cruises on the Columbia River and the Danube and spent time on the water close to home in Exeter. Dalton had discovered the joys of boating on New Hampshire lakes during his childhood in Laconia and passed his interest on to Bea and their children, daughters Jill and Lee Ann, and son, Scott. “We loved being on the water with the four boats we owned during our married life,” says Bea: “Sparky,” a 26-foot lobster boat used for cruising, was a special favorite.

Following a period of declining health, Mike Dalton died on December 2, 2020, at his home in Mesa, Arizona, where he and Bea had moved in 2018. In her eulogy at his UNH memorial service held in Kingsbury Hall, Bea recalled happy days in New Hampshire when children of extended family members came to visit.

For Scott, boating meant special times to bond with his father. “In my preteen years, my Dad and I would sleep out on our sailboat on a mooring at Great Bay Marina in Newington,” he says, recalling the unforgettable moment when he saw the Milky Way for the first time.

And it was a trip out on the water nearly a decade ago — to Appledore Island on the Isles of Shoals — that would inspire Dalton to become a passionate supporter of UNH’s engineering students and programs.

Dalton was a key player in the establishment of the Engineering Internship Program at the Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML), the research laboratory run jointly by Cornell University and UNH on Appledore. On a visit to the island, Dalton realized that the lab offered a unique opportunity for engineering training. He facilitated a program that brings four students to Appledore every summer for a month’s stay and practical experience in projects in which they act as engineering consultants. Dalton served as the program’s first mentor.

Since 2006, the intern program has had huge positive impacts on dozens of engineering students as well as on SML’s physical sustainability infrastructure, from its solar grid to wastewater treatment, according to Jennifer Seavey, Kingsbury director of SML, who has qualified Dalton’s longtime support of the lab as “legendary.” Dalton also brought professional engineers to the program from Unitil, the company he helmed as president for 35 years. When he retired, Unitil stepped in to help support and expand the program in his honor, but Dalton still traveled to Appledore to work with interns until 2016.

A hard worker throughout his life, Dalton was employed by First National grocery stores in high school and while studying for his bachelor’s degree at UNH. He worked as an engineer at Newport Electric in Newport, Rhode Island, before moving back to New Hampshire to accept an engineering position with Exeter and Hampton Electric Company. In 1978, he was named President of the company. In 1985 he helped form the holding company Unitil Corp., which joined Exeter and Hampton Electric Company with two other utility companies. He served as its president until his retirement in 2003; he remained on the Board of Directors for another 10 years.

An active volunteer, Dalton held several community positions in Exeter, including president of the Chamber of Commerce and memberships in the Historic District Commission and Exeter Rotary Club. He was a former president of the UNH Foundation Board and helped establish the College of Engineering and Physical Science (CEPS) Alumni Board, on which he later served as president, along with mentoring many engineering students throughout the years. He helped raise funds to build the Whittemore Center and he and Bea were fixtures at UNH sports events.

His interests were many, including hobbies such as zip-lining and glider flying, but his family always came first, say his children. “He was always available and supportive no matter where I found myself in life,” says his daughter Jill.

His daughter Lee Ann has a favorite memory of her dad’s relationship with Justin, her now-husband, who “dumped” her in seventh grade, a preteen heartbreak her protective father helped her get through. Decades later, Lee Ann and Justin reunited and got married. “Justin made Dad laugh harder than I have ever seen him laugh,” she says. “It was one of the greatest joys of my life to see Dad become friends with the very guy he thought was so full of himself as a young man, the guy who dumped his daughter and then married her 30 years later. I’m so lucky to have had a dad like mine, ready to start new adventures and forge such strong connections with so many people. He was one of a kind.”

Jesse P. Gangwer ’53
Jesse P. Gangwer ’53
An icon on Main Street in Durham, devoted to family
“P

eace and Love!” Jesse Gangwer enjoyed ending spirited conversations with Durham friends and new acquaintances with his signature wish for a calm and happy day. Decades of students and other visitors to shops and restaurants along Main Street could count on seeing Gangwer taking care of business in the Town and Campus block, which he acquired in 1960.

Early on, business at the first Town and Campus store was so slow that he amused himself by playing handball against the building, recalls June Allen Gangwer, his wife of 64 years. The lull was brief. Students and Durham residents alike soon realized that if you needed something, Town and Campus would probably have it — and if not, Jesse would do everything he could to get it.

He kept a “want list” of items people asked for and tried to ensure that the most popular requests, (which included branded UNH clothing and school supplies for students) were always in stock. He and June also tried to help anyone in need of a ride, including driving them to Dover or Portsmouth. “At one point, we would even pick up prescriptions that people called in to the pharmacy in Dover and bring them to the store where the patient could pick them up,” she says. “You could never do that today!”

Gangwer had a soft spot for UNH students: He cashed their checks, and was known for lending emergency money, which was almost always repaid even it sometimes took a few years. Recalling his kindheartedness, June remembers the time he noticed a forlorn-looking young man, suitcase in hand, sitting on the sidewalk outside the store. Asking if he could help, Gangwer learned that the student, from another country, had been accepted at UNH but through some mix-up had arrived in Durham with no place to stay. Gangwer took charge, finding him accommodations for the night and getting him settled.

The Town and Campus store was such a success that the Gangwers soon branched out, adding a card store, an ice cream shop, a flower shop, a bookstore, and a dry cleaner, among other commercial enterprises. Many alumni fondly remember the Down Under, a casual gathering spot in a space under the store, which was later replaced by a popular Italian restaurant. The Gangwers’ son, Samuel ’89, opened a second Town and Campus store in Plymouth, which he has since sold. Jesse and June also purchased the Tin Palace (current site of an Aroma Joe’s), a nearby restaurant specializing in hamburgers. When a national hamburger chain came to town, the Tin Palace switched to offering pizza, which was, says June, “a huge success with the students.”

Although much of his life revolved around his businesses, Gangwer enjoyed several hobbies, including attending UNH hockey games with June, fly-fishing in Portsmouth and in Florida where they vacationed, and competitive games of cribbage. He was a loving father to their three children, Samuel, daughter Catherine, and son Allen, who passed away at age 15, and a proud grandfather to six grandchildren. One of Jesse’s granddaughters, Kaitlyn Bassett Guillemette ’07, took over her grandparents’ flower shop (Red Carpet Florist) and moved it to Lee, where it is known as In Bloom Weddings and Events.

Thanksgiving was traditionally a special time for Gangwer. For many years, he and June hosted the holiday at the Tin Palace for their extended family. With restaurant-size pots and plenty of room to spread out, it was easy to cook for a crowd and a lot of fun, says June. Jesse was a natural in the kitchen, she adds. During the Korean War he had served with a medical team in charge of inspecting all the food served at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

Following Jesse’s death from heart failure on April 21, 2021, at the age of 89, many who knew him sent online condolences to his family, sharing how much he had touched their lives. A former student, grateful to Jesse for hiring him to work at Town and Campus while he was studying at UNH, wrote, “He was more than my employer, he was my friend and a mentor to my business ambitions. His patient counsel made a difference in my life.” Still another spoke for decades of UNH students and Durham residents, writing, “I will not be able to drive through downtown Durham without thinking about him.”
