Robert Charles DeBlois ’76
Innovative and compassionate, he devoted his life to helping students succeed.
ob DeBlois liked to say he was “born on third base” — his way of acknowledging a happy childhood filled with advantages. Growing up in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, he hiked and skied at his family’s vacation home in the White Mountains, and as a teenager he attended Cranwell, a private Jesuit prep school in Massachusetts.
Among the lifelong friends he made at Cranwell was Michael Brosnan ’80G, who gave the eulogy at Rob’s funeral following his death on Jan. 31. Sharing stories of their teenage hijinks, Michael remembered Rob as “attacking each day with a rare kind of mental and physical exuberance” and “one of those kids in constant motion, looking for constant engagement.”
That energy, coupled with a desire to give back to those less fortunate, defined Rob throughout his life. After graduating from UNH, he taught high school English in Pawtucket and worked with the college-prep program Upward Bound. He then went on to earn master’s degrees from Brown University and Rhode Island College. In 1984 he created SPIRIT, a summer program to help urban students succeed academically.
Five years later Rob founded the Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program (UCAP), an independent public middle school whose mission is to identify talented at-risk inner-city students and help prepare them for high school success. UCAP has been named a national model by the Carnegie Foundation. Rob himself received numerous accolades, among them an honorary doctorate of pedagogy from Rhode Island College, Rhode Island Middle School Principal of the Year, induction into Rhode Island’s Martin Luther King Hall of Fame and The National Caring Award from the National Caring Foundation in Washington, D.C.
Rob was featured in Brosnan’s book, “Against the Current: How One School Struggled and Succeeded with At-Risk Kids,” in the documentary “Accelerating America” and in a “Spotlight” episode on CBS television. Along the way he served on several boards of directors and wrote prolifically about the importance of championing education for the underserved.
“He was a free spirit,” says Bonnie (Hunt) DeBlois ’75, his UNH girlfriend and wife of 39 years. “He was a breaker of rules. I think this was one reason he was so successful in creating new programs. He was great at thinking outside of the box.”
For the last 45 years of his life, Rob used a wheelchair, the result of a diving accident in the spring of his junior year at UNH that left him a quadriplegic. Devoted to his family, he found creative ways to engage with his children, Justin, Eric and Sherry ’15, when they were small, including telling imaginative stories starring their golden retriever. As the children grew, he enjoyed watching them hike, ski and rock climb in the White Mountains as he had once done. Always, he emphasized the importance of courage, honesty, empathy and hard work.
Justin recalls a life lesson in courage when his father taught him how to cross a street safely. “Being a cautious child, I would wait until there wasn’t a car in sight,” he says, “and then look back and forth a few more times before crossing.” As encouragement, Rob had Justin push his wheelchair across the road, quietly teaching his son to have confidence in his own judgment.
Rob was always delighted when his family, friends or students did well, says Bonnie. “One thing I found most endearing and amazing about Rob was his ability to take real pleasure in the experiences and successes of others. He loved to hear about friends’ trips and adventures — things he would never be able to experience.”
Rob and Bonnie did, however, travel the country for educational conferences, and take vacations to visit family and friends, or to enjoy the mountains. Rob was always on the lookout for a good bike path.
In an article he wrote for this magazine in 1987, Rob acknowledged that of course quadriplegia had meant facing challenges, including lost opportunities and missed experiences, especially as he transitioned from college student to full-fledged adult. From the start, however, he decided to commit himself to leading a meaningful life. “Growth may be painful,” he wrote, “but stagnation is more so.”
Rob always emphasized the role others played in his successes. He considered himself a very lucky man.
Catherine Heppner ’95
She was not the tallest person in the room, but she had a big personality and an even bigger heart.
Am Not Short, I Am Fun-Sized,” reads a refrigerator magnet in the Sunday River vacation home Catherine (Cassie) Heppner shared with her husband Michael Cormier and their son, Jack. Whether she was delivering a witty maid of honor toast at the wedding of her sister Eleanor Hershey, cheekily cheering for the Yankees while wearing a Red Sox jersey or skiing or wakeboarding, Cassie did everything with enthusiasm and spirit.
News of Cassie’s death on Feb. 9 left her family, friends and colleagues stunned. An executive with Timberland in Stratham, New Hampshire, she had stopped by her office that Sunday to prepare for an upcoming business trip to Dallas. Hours later, police responding to a call from the Timberland complex found her stabbed to death. An arrest has been made.
Cassie’s husband fondly recalls her exuberance and sense of humor. The two met on a blind date that Cassie followed up with an invitation to dinner at her place. “I arrived to find her standing in a cloud of smoke in her backyard,” says Mike. “There were two blackened and burnt hamburgers on the grill and nothing else.” The burgers strongly resembled hockey pucks, says Mike, so Cassie calmly suggested they walk into town to grab something more edible. It was clear that culinary skills were not among her many talents, says Mike, recalling later attempts that set off smoke alarms and brought neighborhood children running to see what was happening.
Outdoors, however, Cassie was in her element and few could keep up with her. Always excited to share her favorite experiences, “She was the one who got me to go ice climbing for the first (and last) time,” Eleanor recalls.
Mike, who had never skied before, signed up for ski lessons at Sunday River shortly after meeting Cassie. “I spent every weekend chasing her and her friends around the mountain,” he says. She was proud of Jack, who was just three when she started him skiing, dropping him off at a children’s class and then hiding where she could watch his progress.
“There was never a dull moment in Cassie’s presence,” says Mike. Their frequent remodeling projects found her carrying shingles around on a roof or gamely using a nail gun. When they poured a concrete slab for their hot tub, Cassie spent an entire Saturday lugging 80-pound bags of concrete. “Her motto was ‘just get it done!’” says Mike.
Cassie brought the same enthusiasm to her career at Timberland, where she was director of marketing for Timberland PRO, the company’s line of professional work wear. The position was a perfect fit: She loved working for a company that shared her passion for the outdoors and was so gregarious that she stopped perfect strangers wearing Timberland items to ask how they liked the company’s products.
Despite a busy professional and personal life, Cassie always found time to help others. Following Hurricane Maria, she traveled to Puerto Rico to assist the rebuilding efforts. She also volunteered with Big City Mountaineers, an organization that encourages teens to enjoy the outdoors, and she lent her expertise to Girls at Work, a group that encourages young women to consider careers in the building trades. Cassie’s knowledge and upbeat demeanor also made her a popular speaker at professional meetings, including UNH’s May 2019 digital marketing conference.
Several days after she passed away, hundreds of people gathered in Exeter for a celebration of her life. The enormous turnout was not a surprise. “Cassie was one of a kind,” says Mike. “There will never be anyone else like her.”
